Airport collection

Where do I collect the car at Dubrovnik Airport?

Dubrovnik Airport is Ruđer Bošković Airport, near the village of Čilipi, 22.5 km from Dubrovnik. Arrivals are in terminal building B. The airport lists numerous car rental offices on site and marks one parking lot and drop-off point for rental cars on its map.

The exact meeting place for your car is written in your rental voucher, because it depends on the rental company. The terms require a valid national licence with its details in Latin script, and the rental agent may refuse the car if the driver's age or experience is below the minimum shown on it.

Pick-up points

Can I collect in Dubrovnik and return the car in Split?

Most of the cars you can book here are based at Dubrovnik Airport itself, so car hire at Dubrovnik Airport is collected where you land. Others are city-delivery cars or cars from another pick-up point in Dubrovnik. Put your dates in the form and the search shows what is free for them.

Yes, on cars that allow it. In autumn 2026 searches, cars collected in Dubrovnik were offered for a one-way rental to Split, Zagreb, Zadar or Pula. Choose the drop-off city in the form and the search lists the cars for that drop-off.

Split is 252 km from the airport by the Pelješac bridge, and that route stays inside Croatia. The car goes back to the drop-off address in the voucher with the fuel level it left with.

Before you book

What each car shows before you pay

Each car carries its own conditions: the deposit, whether a credit card is needed, whether cancellation is free, the gearbox and the number of seats. They differ from car to car, and all of them are on the car before you pay.

01

Deposit and payment card

The deposit is shown per car, and on part of the supply it is zero. Some cars need a physical embossed credit card in the main driver's name; some companies accept a debit card, and when they do the booking and the voucher say so.

02

Cancellation and driver

Free cancellation is a per-car condition. So are the minimum driver age and driving experience, which can differ even between two cars of the same model.

03

Fuel and rental days

Fuel works one way on every car: return it with the level you collected it at. Below that level you pay the difference at the rental company's rates, and above it you are not paid back. The minimum charge is 24 hours, so a car kept from Monday morning to Tuesday afternoon costs two days.

Before you drive

What should I check first?

Start with the dates and places you need. Compare the conditions on each car, then use your voucher to prepare for collection.

01

Can I drive a rental car into Dubrovnik Old Town?

Not without a reservation, from 1 March to 30 November. The City of Dubrovnik runs a special traffic regime zone around the Old Town, covering Pile, Ploče and Ilijina glavica, and it is enforced by video surveillance.

A visitor may drive in only with a prepaid parking space at the Pile or Žičara lower car park, or when staying at a hotel inside the zone, or at accommodation whose host has registered the number plate in advance. Rental cars are not exempt. On the drive from Dubrovnik Airport to the Old Town, the Tourist Board advises visitors without a reservation to park at Gruž, Ilijina Glavica or the public garage and take the bus.

02

What does the standard insurance not cover?

Under the rental terms for Croatia, standard insurance does not cover damage to the wheels, the undercarriage, the windscreen or the interior of the car. After an insured event you must tell the rental agent straight away and get a police report, unless the agent agrees otherwise, or the insurance is cancelled.

Deliberate damage and neglect also void it, and cars may only be driven on paved public roads. Higher cover levels are not described in the terms; where a car offers more than the standard cover on a Dubrovnik rental, the car's own page says what it adds.

03

How far is it from Dubrovnik Airport by car?

Routed times from the airport's rental car park, rounded up to the next five minutes. They do not include traffic, border checks or ferry queues, and the airport says the drive into Dubrovnik can take up to an hour in summer.

On the road

Can I take the car to Montenegro or Bosnia and Herzegovina?

Only with permission arranged before you travel. The terms for Croatia say prices and conditions for driving abroad depend on the length of the trip, the type of car and the rental company.

Both borders are external Schengen borders, so every car and passenger is checked on the way out and on the way back. A Croatian-registered car needs no green card for either country: both insurance bureaus accept Croatian number plates as proof of insurance.

Rental questions

Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask before booking a car at Dubrovnik Airport, answered from the rental terms for Croatia.

What documents do I need to rent a car in Croatia?

A valid national driving licence with its details in Latin script, which must not expire before the rental ends. Copies and electronic licences are not accepted. If your licence is only valid in the country that issued it, the terms strongly recommend an International Driving Permit.

Do I need a credit card?

It depends on the car. Some cars need a physical embossed credit card in the main driver's name, and some companies accept a debit card, which must also be physical, embossed and in the main driver's name. The booking and the voucher say which.

How long is the deposit kept?

The booking and the voucher show how the deposit is held and when it is refunded. Some companies keep it for 30 to 45 days after the car is returned, and a fine or unpaid toll from the rental period is charged to it.

Who pays tolls, parking and fines?

The renter pays for fuel, parking, fines and toll roads.

Can I take the car on a ferry to an island?

Only with prior arrangement, made with customer support before you complete the booking.

Can I bring a pet?

Only small pets, kept in their travel carrier at all times.
